22 Things I Learned When I Was 22

Today’s my 23rd birthday and, though 22 felt like a quiet year, there was a lot to be learned! In typical blogger fashion, here are 22 things I learned when I was 22.

  1. There isn’t a set system of life, even though the media wants you to believe that
  2. Don’t sweat the small stuff, you won’t care about this in a week’s time
  3. Taxes are easier than you might think
  4. Where you place a friend isn’t always where they place you in return
  5. No one actually knows what they’re doing – you are not alone in that feeling
  6. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing, even if they or society pressures you into thinking you do
  7. Dogs are huge responsibilities and can sometimes get in the way of going out
  8. You only need one hour a night to make good progress in a hobby
  9. You don’t have to answer your emails as soon as they come in – in fact people don’t usually expect this
  10. Making time to not work and do the things that you love actually makes you a better worker
  11. Love isn’t always 50/50 and sometimes that’s more beautiful than if it was
  12. The people you love will make decisions that put you on completely different planes of life but different directions don’t have to be so far apart
  13. You will most likely live to see 80, you really don’t need to be in a rush or your later years might not have any milestones!
  14. You can let go of someone if it’s better for your mental health to do so – even if that person is a family member
  15. You don’t have to apologise for doing anything that puts your health before other people’s wants
  16. Sometimes you have to say ‘no’ to things and nobody cares about it as much as you think they do
  17. Saving is a really hard thing to do in your twenties but it’s really important
  18. Money isn’t everything but it’s totally okay to be very motivated by it, even if people around you aren’t
  19. Sometimes happiness is in security which is why a career and strong finances should always be a priority when you’re building your life
  20. Holidays and taking breaks is really really important
  21. It’s okay to tell someone that something is important to you and that you want it to be prioritised, in fact, this could completely improve a situation
  22. I’m totally doing okay!
