Interconnectivity Theory

Hello lovelies,

For those of you who don’t know already my favourite film, besides Disney’s ‘Tangled’, is ‘I Heart Huckabees’. It’s basically a philosophical comedy which explores whether coincidences should be treated as so or whether there is anything more to them. The film has many different theories intertwined throughout but one of my favourite ones proposed is the interconnectivity theory.

Basically, this theory is held by the existential detective couple and assumes that everything in the world is connected by tiny little particles and, equally, everyone is connected and essentially the same because we are all made out of the same things.

The way it was explained in the film was by Bernard:

When you get the blanket thing you can relax because everything you could ever want or be you already have and are’.

This is one of my all-time favourite quotes and I genuinely believe that everyone can take something from it. If everybody believed in these words then no one would be greedy or jealous or bitter because everyone would have piece of mind that everyone shares what they have because we are all the same and share the same matter. It would settle the people who are desperate to become someone else or are working towards something more because what they are aspiring for, if it’s already out there, then they already have a piece of it because everyone and everything is connected.

This kind of idea was also explored in another film, ‘Waking Life’, (also a philosophical film discussing various ideas and theories). In one particular scene, a couple were speaking about ideas and knowledge and the possibility that we are all able to share it on some supernatural level. They discussed a study in which a group of people were given a new crossword to do one day and then one that had already been done before by other people. The controlled group found the crossword which had already been published much easier and the scientists proposed that this was because once the answers have been solved and are already out there, then other people can access that knowledge too. I think that’s really cool. There’s other evidence which supports this including the fact that when people are searching for an answer, new discoveries are often made by many people at one time- as if once the answer has been thought of, everyone else can access it.

The theories of connection really fascinate me and, as a Philosophy student, I think it’s okay to rave about these things once in a while on here. Just because I’ve blogged about girly things doesn’t mean I’m not interested in more intellectual topics!

Remember that you already have and are everything there is,

Hannah x
