Christmas tree decorations can be expensive. Starting out on your own is also expensive. Since this year, we only have 9 tree decorations to our name, we’ve had to get thrifty. Here is how to make an origami star to use as Christmas decorations, on your tree or otherwise!
You Will Need:
- Square origami paper
To start an origami star, you’ll need a pentagon. Fold the square origami sheet to make a rectangle. Without unfolding, take the top left corner and align it at the bottom, unfold and take the bottom left corner and align it with the top edge. The creases then make a square. Take the bottom left corner and point it at the centre of the square creases. Take that very corner in the centre and fold it back so the right hand side looks like a kite. Then fold the left hand side to meet the kite’s edge. Fold those two shapes back to back until it resembles the figure below. Then snip off the top!
The Star Creases
Now we can start the preparation for the origami star itself! Begin with the pentagon unfolded. With each of the five sides, pull them up just above the centre mark, ensuring both left and right point touch the middle of the creases at the sides. Once all are done, we make the point creases! Fold a side as before but take the bottom corner and lift it to allow it to fold. It should make a spike that sits just outside of the folded side. Squash that spike down to make a crease before unfolding and repeating the steps for all sides.
Pinch the five clearly defined points of the origami star while bringing them to the centre of the shape. The previous folds magically spiral around the middle, creating a star shape with ease. Looks good, right? You’re not finished yet! Turn the star over and fold each point in half! Voila!
All that’s left to do is punch a hole in one point of the star, tie on some string and you’re done! Cute, minimalist origami star Christmas tree decorations!
