As a year ends, I really try to take something from it and move forward with my lessons learned the following year. Here’s what I learned in 2017.
Sometimes the only way to handle a situation is to get out. During 2017, I had to withstand many a sticky situation. Without going into too much detail, I experienced harassment, real harassment, for the first time in my life. We’re not talking about a silly joke. There was hacking and fraud involved. My personal details were saved in a file. Photos were downloaded and collected. I can’t even begin to explain the stress and anxiety I experienced during that time. In fact, I am still dealing with it online. I did, however, through that time, do something incredibly brave to get out of the situation and it definitely paid off!
Health comes first
Health should always be number one. During 2017, I was incredibly stressed and anxious from the above but also in a lot of pain. I definitely also overworked myself and suffered many ocular migraines, loss of eyesight, a vitamin D deficiency and iron deficiency. Though hereditary factors and my vegetarian diet do contribute somewhat, being tired and run down was also a big cause of the above. In 2018, I’m taking care of myself!
Business takes more balls than I thought. This was a hard lesson to learn. I’ve never viewed myself as soft or incapable. I am ballsy and brutal quite easily, but I’ve learned a lot about business etiquette and knowing how much to let on, how to negotiate and that making connections is important. Business is not for the faint hearted and you have to toughen up a little bit. But I’ve also learned, in turn, that I am deserving. I have witnessed, through my own hard headedness and will to work, what I am made of. The freelance stigma is nothing, running everything on your own is hard but not impossible.
These are my lessons learned from 2017, what about you?
